From Workplace Readiness to Stronger Performance
A large public-sector organisation periodically recruits employees who may have the required qualifications but are not always fully prepared for the expectations and pressures of the workplace. Through an ongoing programme of professional development delivered by Blakes' Training Institute, staff have received practical training in customer service, communication, critical thinking, problem-solving, professionalism and adaptability. Over time, employees have become more confident in handling customers and workplace challenges, with more issues being resolved at the staff level rather than unnecessarily escalated.
The training has contributed to stronger employee performance, improved customer service and greater resilience when organisational changes are introduced. Staff are better able to assess situations, think through problems and respond constructively rather than becoming overwhelmed by unfamiliar circumstances. The sessions have also provided a valuable psychosocial benefit, giving employees opportunities to reflect, share experiences and develop practical approaches to workplace pressures, helping to strengthen morale and reduce the likelihood of disengagement and attrition.
These improvements have created benefits beyond the individual employee. Better-performing staff contribute to greater organisational productivity, stronger service delivery and, in a revenue-focused public institution, improved capacity to collect the revenues needed to support public services. The experience demonstrates how sustained professional development can help transform employees who may initially be uncertain about the world of work into more confident, customer-oriented and adaptable professionals who make a stronger contribution to both their organisation and the people it serves.
